It’s interesting what happens when we decide that we want something.
When I was in college, I can remember seeing the T-Mobile Sidekick campaign banners at the Glendale Galleria. I had to have one. It was a 180-degree rotating display, a scroll-wheel that lit up in all the colors, and it was game-changing. I wanted one badly. My friend Sheena and I planned on purchasing our Sidekicks on their release date. Unfortunately, Sheena got sick on the eve we were supposed to go to the mall and purchase our devices, but I was so eager to get mine that I stopped at the mall and waited in a long line before finally becoming the proud owner of a T-Mobile Sidekick. Eventually, I made my way to Sheena’s house to check on her. As soon as I walked in her house, she remarked, “You got your Sidekick, huh?” She knew I couldn’t wait. The price for the phone was $350. I don’t know how I came up with that kind of money as a college student, but I did. When we want something we make it happen. We don’t care about the hurdles. We hop over them and make it happen. I went to Vegas for my twenty-first birthday with a group of friends. On one of our daily outings, we ended up at the COACH store. From the corner of my eyes I spotted the most beautiful pair of jet black COACH sunglasses with a diamond butterfly on the side of the frame. The price tag read $150. Now at the time, that seemed like a lot of money. I was a recent graduate so money wasn’t falling out of the sky. I wanted the glasses. I figured it out. I had those glasses for fifteen years before I broke the side lens. (I’m still mad about it.) Then there was the time when I wanted to take this action-packed eight-hour course. It was a full-day intensive with like-minded entrepreneurs to uplevel their skills. But, it was on my birthday. And, if anyone knows anything about me, my birthday is a “national holiday!” But, this class was chock-full of insight and resources. I had to be there. I decided to take the class. Most people would have been “too busy” to invest in themselves. I wasn’t. Brilliant Mama, think of your last five big purchases. Were they necessary? It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you had a desire for them. You didn’t make any excuses. You made it happen. That’s what I want you to do when it comes to investing in yourself to build your business or uplevel your leadership. Break through your excuses of not having enough time or being able to afford it. When you invest in yourself, it’s not a cost; it’s an investment. When you invest in something, you can expect a return. When something has a cost, it depreciates. Listen to yourself when you’re talking about your dreams. Observe the excuses you use to talk yourself out of not taking action. Make the decision. I hate indecisive people. It reeks of insecurity and low self-esteem. Make the decision. And, your path will light up with insight, strategy, and direction for how to manifest the reality which you seek. Make the decision, like my client Chiarra, who after investing in our signature training, emphatically stated, “If I can invest in Gucci and nice things like that, I certainly can invest in myself. Do yourself a favor. Invest in yourself.” If you’re truly ready to invest in yourself, I’m inviting you into a visioning conversation to discuss what your future looks like and to help you stand firm in your spirit and live the kind of life you’re called to live.
